When we started with River Mountain Farms we knew we wanted to develop a farm to produce high quality beef (or breeding stock) and possibly cheese, based on this farm’s characteristics and our preferences.  To be successful we felt that farm location, land physical characteristics, cattle breed and method of raising the cattle would be the key building blocks.  With these key building blocks in place we could then develop our sales and marketing plan.

River Mountain Farms is centrally located reasonably close to Abingdon, VA (20 mins), Charlottesville, VA (4 hours), Asheville, NC (90 mins.) and Charlotte, NC (3 hours).  Inclusive to these areas are numerous vineyards and up scale restaurants catering to tourist and seasonal owners.  The street address is 5637 River Mountain Road, Lebanon, VA 24266.

The farm encompasses 200 acres, about 100 acres in forests and 100 acres in hay meadows and pastures.  This is a mountain farm, one hay meadow is atop a 2,800 foot mountain with pastures covering the slopes.  The Clinch River forms our Northern Boundary, the river winds for almost 2 miles around the property like a big snake, the Clinch has as been called “the most ecologically diverse region of Virginia” by the Nature Conservancy.  The river valleys contain more than 400 species of rare plants and animals, 22 of which are listed under the federal Endangered Species Act.  Per the Nature Conservancy this diversity is “unmatched in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States”.  Obviously we feel the need to be good stewards of the land so any endeavor must be in concert with nature.
